The crisp lines of perpendicular windows frame glimpses of the surrounding greenery, leaving occupants feeling connected and oriented to their natural surroundings.

Meticulously layering materials, the residence’s artfully placed screens and slats offer depth, privacy, and shade, whilst its overall design and interior furnishings create an aura of minimalism, comfort, timelessness, and modernity. Walker Warner Architects Thoughtfully Construct The Ideal Kua Bay Retreat

Situated along the rugged coastlines of Kohala, this family retreat, dubbed the Kua Bay, embraces the spirit of Mauka-Makai—the symbolic flow of lava from mountain to sea—through its direct connections to the volcanic landscape and dramatic vistas of the Pacific Ocean. Unfolding in a series of curated experiences, this house is characterized by its dual entrances.

Walker Warner Architects Thoughtfully Construct The Ideal Kua Bay Retreat

On the mountain side of the property, the entrance is cut directly into the lava field to limit its visual impact and establish privacy from surrounding neighbours. The main hale seamlessly frames the ocean with expansive floor-to-ceiling retractable glass doors and wood screens, intended to soften harsh sunlight and provide relief from trade winds without obstructing views. With clean lines, large openings and simple geometries, the horizontal structure mirrors the ocean’s horizon and provides an elegant transition from lava to sea.

Showcasing a palatial garage, and guest house, alongside expansive main living areas which provide sweeping views of the Pacific, an outdoor terrace, and an infinity-edge pool, the Kua Bay retreat represents a delicate response to the landscape, with thoughtful details which form an ideal balance between manmade and natural formations.

Lutah Maria Riggs’ Iconic Erdman House Goes on Sale For The First Time in 50 Years

Caught between the magnificent Santa Ynez mountains and some of California’s most beautiful coastline, this sprawling Montecito residence lies just east of Santa Barbara, amidst eight-square-miles of lavish estates, luxe compounds, and secluded manors. Dubbed the Erdman House, this property by American architect Lutah Maria Riggs, spans a full four knolltop acres of land, representing a stunning example of mid-century vernacular.

Lutah Maria Riggs’ Iconic Erdman House Goes on Sale For The First Time in 50 Years

Listing for the first time in fifty years, the Erdman House embraces the principle of shakkei in its relationship with the surrounding Santa Barbara scenery. ‘Shakkei’, which is Japanese for ‘borrowed scenery’, is the principle of “incorporating background landscape into the composition of a garden” found in traditional East Asian garden design. This principle thus suggests that four design essentials were met during construction. These essentials included, an interior garden, natural and pre-existing elements, and man-made optical illusions.

As the first woman to ever be named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Lutah Maria Riggs is lionized for her compelling works of art. Deemed one of many rare finds and heavily sought-after treasures, the Erdman House is currently worth an estimated $7.5M. Featuring 4 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, and 4 half-bathrooms, this property is complete with a combination of sleek black tiles, carpeted rooms and hardwood floors, alongside walls of glass and clean white coats.

Extending outward into a sharp U-shape, the house facilitates room for a pool, courtyard, and garden of eucalyptus trees. Showcasing an assortment of sculptures, plus a notable series of contemporary works along the winding driveway, the Erdman House boasts panoramic views of its neighbouring mountains and ocean setting, with private fences and garages. Available for a virtual tour, the Erdman House is currently listed under Compass Agent, Susan Pate.

The CML House Expansion Results in a Luxurious Bali Stone-Clad Mirror Pool

Located in Montpellier, in the south of France, the Brengues Le Pavec architecture agency specializes in a multitude of contemporary and refined architecture projects. Prioritizing harmony, proportion, emptiness, transparency, contrast, and brightness, the agency aims to create balanced structures which highlight the essence of the overall project and portray distinct personality.

The CML House Expansion Results in a Luxurious Bali Stone-Clad Mirror Pool

As a direct result of a client’s need to expand, the CML house lies strategically across both a hill-top with breathtaking views of the neighbouring villages, and the base of a plot with an elongated geometry. Its unique position dictates the route in which Brengues Le Pavec plans their construction. Following the natural geometric shape of the plot, this perfectly contemporary construction takes the form of two horizontal slabs, placed on a base of locally-sourced stone.

Underlined by a generous line of glazing, whilst remaining open to the landscape, the CML house showcases an interior metal staircase which provides access to the solarium on a roof covered in a layer of vegetation, and staggering 360° view of the north of Montpellier, whilst carefully placed steps from the terrace of the living area, have allowed the inclusion of a Bali stone-clad mirror pool.

Through carrying out specific topography work between the natural land and stone furniture, Brengues Le Pavec has successfully created a welcoming space in the heart of the garden. The combination of proportions and integration has thus given the CML house a distinct levitating, warm, and intimate, effect, thanks to the large overhangs, combined with extensive glass volumes, alongside raw and noble materials such as stone, wood and metal.
